FEATURED HOLIDAYS - EASTER

 File:The resurrection day.jpg

Easter is a moveable feast, meaning it is not fixed in relation to the civil calendar. The First Council of Nicaea (325) established the date of Easter as the first Sunday after the full moon (the Paschal Full Moon) following the northern hemisphere's vernal equinox.[3] Ecclesiastically, the equinox is reckoned to be on March 21 (even though the equinox occurs, astronomically speaking, on March 20 in most years), and the "Full Moon" is not necessarily the astronomically correct date. The date of Easter therefore varies between March 22 and April 25. Eastern Christianity bases its calculations on the Julian Calendar whose March 21 corresponds, during the 21st century, to April 3 in the Gregorian Calendar, in which calendar their celebration of Easter therefore varies between April 4 and May 8. Challah

This Easter favorite can be traced back to Biblical times. It was frequently served with wine and fish and marked the start of the Jewish Sabbath.  The Challah, also known as khale, hallah and kitke, the specially braided bread is a favorite for Easter and Passover.  In Jewish tradition, the blessing of the Challah is done at the beginning of  the Sabbath and holiday meals and is said to represent the  manna that fell from heaven.  This manna fell after the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt as they wandered the desert for forty years. It would fall just before the holidays and the Sabbath.

Many of us are undergoing the January blahs right now. You know, that anti-climax, "what do I do now" feeling that hits you after the holiday festivities are over and you face, depending on where you live, a long cold winter? Well cheer up, there are still a lot of events to celebrate and there is nothing like a celebration to take away the blahs. Here are a few.:

Martin Luther King's Birthday will be celebrated on Monday January 18th. This is a very important celebration which gives everyone the opportunity to reflect upon the contributions of this great man and what we can all do to contribute to a cause in our own ways.

There are some smaller, fun days you can observe as follows:

It accompanied this announcement with footage of Swiss peasants pulling strands of spaghetti down from trees. Huge numbers of viewers were taken in. Celebrating Arbor Day

Arbor Day came long before it was fashionable to be green and conservation was popular. Wide open spaces are nice but when it is the result of massive deforestation, it is not so pretty. When Sterling Morton arrived from Detroit to Nebraska in 1854, he was appalled at the open prairies he saw, the result of using trees for everything from lumber to fuel. He felt that Nebraska would benefit greatly from large scale tree planting. It would be the beginning of his mission of worldwide conservation.  . Read the full article
